The Good Thing Is They Are Now Hiring

But most everything else is wrong with this sign.

As a technical writer, I must admit that I get just ever so anal when it comes to bad signs. You name it: misspellings, bad punctuation, bad grammar, etc. I find myself driving down a road mentally correcting signs as I go. And "they" think cell phone usage is a driving distraction. However, this sign also made me laugh. Obviously inflation there is worse than where I live.

  1. I noticed bad signs as well. I also notice signs that could have been worded more concisely.

My local post office has a sign: "We're sorry, but there is no public restroom". Leaving aside the instinctive question of where no public restroom exists, I think this sign is too wordy. "No public restroom" would have got the job done with far fewer words. And I'm sure people needing to pee don't give a flying crap whether the post office employees feel sorrowful about the lack of facilities.

Concerning the sign in your post, I'm guessing they won't get a lot of work out of the fish "sandwichs", either. Perhaps they might think of hiring people to do the McJob?

  2. When I was legal copy editor (oh the horror!), somebody in our office had pasted a cartoon from the New Yorker on their cube wall that showed a group of peopled going around town in the dead of night correcting signs (or "signage" as the urban planning people insist on calling them). The caption was "Rogue copy editors at work."

    Ba-dum-bum. Sssss.

  3. Those are some pricey fish sandwichs. Must be made from sea kittens.

  4. Libertine, perhaps the best solution would have to put a squat toilet around back. No sign needed.

Ann, I love the idea of that cartoon. Don't know that I've seen it. However, you just reminded me of another New Yorker cartoon I like and will try to find now.

    Lisa, oh no...not kittens.
